Bahrain foils terror attacks, 47 arrested
He said that the members of this group are a few of the most risky terrorists who are active through worldwide webs and seek to undermine the security of the kingdom after having been transformed into tools for the implementation of external agendas that target the stability and security of Bahrain.
The news come amid escalated tension between Bahrain and Iran.
The ministry said the arrests focused on an organization with “strong links to Iranian parties and terrorists residing in Iran”.
Public Prosecutor Ahmed al-Hammadi said on November 5 that the five had communicated with members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps with the aim of carrying out attacks on public buildings.
” Over the past six months multiple seizures of explosives, homemade IED and VIEDs, bomb-manufacturing equipment and caches of arms and ammunition have been directly linked to Iranian-backed extremists who meant to use the materials in terror attacks in Bahrain”, said the statement.
In August, Bahrain arrested five people suspected of links with Iran in connection with a bombing that killed two policemen.
The Sunni Muslim-ruled kingdom says Shi’ite neighbor Iran is trying to foment unrest among its majority Shi’ite population.
Home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, Bahrain faced protests during the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings in which Shi’ites demanded political reforms.
