Baker Mayfield leaves game after second-quarter hit
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield left the Sooners’ game against TCU with a head injury after halftime and will not return. TCU then nailed a field goal to cut its deficit to seven points, then miraculously got the ball back with plenty of time on the clock to either win the game or force overtime. But the Frogs dominated down the stretch, and the grades reflect a spotty performance against a wounded team. But Oklahoma strong safety Steven Parker had other plans, batting down Bram Kohlhausen’s pass that would have floated into his receiver’s hands and sealed a second straight TCU win over the Sooners.
It’s still unclear whether TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin will play because of a sore ankle. With Mayfield on the sideline, the Oklahoma offense crumbled in the second half, as the Sooners almost blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead.
Sawyer threw a third pick in the third quarter that Oklahoma turned into another touchdown for a 30-13 lead.
Air raid display: Sooners QB Baker Mayfield has played his way into Heisman consideration, especially after completing 24 of 34 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 76 yards and another TD against Baylor last week. “That’s when our doctors said we’re not going to have him play”. “They had no timeouts left, and if we make it, they only have 50 seconds to go a long way”. Without Mayfield, OU’s offense had turned into a disaster. He also 343 yards rushing and six TDs. But they moved quickly, and the stadium actually filled more quickly than usual.
DOWN: Trevorris Johnson – I have seen calls for this kid to get more opportunities all over this blog and twitter since he stepped on campus, and it looked like he was finally going to get his chance Saturday night. Samaje Perine ran for a 72-yard touchdown to up the Sooners up 30-13, but TCU scored 16 unanswered points with Kohlhausen throwing two touchdown passes including an 86-yarder to KaVontae Turpin.
On TCU’s second possession, backup quarterback Foster Sawyer hit Kolby Listenbee with deep throws of 44 and 37 yards, the latter for a touchdown. He completed only nine of his 20 pass attempts.
After that pass, TCU went on a scoring drought that lasted into the third quarter when Aaron Green responded with a shifty 26-yard touchdown thanks to Oklahoma turning the ball over on downs.
The Horned Frog secondary was lit up by the passing attacks of Texas Tech and OSU. Once Trevor Knight took the reigns behind center, the Sooners leaned heavily on the duo of Perine and Mixon – and they delivered, despite missing chunks of plays between them due to injury. The Sooners’ wide receivers totaled just 12 catches and weren’t running free much.
Sterling Shepard, in his final home game, ended with eight catches for 111 yards and a 21-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
