Baker Mayfield leaves TCU game with injury
Over under has seen the TCU Horned Frogs go a 4-4 so far, while the Oklahoma Sooners go 5-3. With Knight under center the Sooners punted on six of their nine drives in the second half, and running back Samaje Perine’s 72-yard touchdown burst and the Horned Frogs failed two-point conversion in the final minute of play saved Oklahoma’s season. In these type of games, home field and senior day play a big part in who I pick.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) is tackled by TCU safety Ridwan Issahaku (31) during the first quarter of an NCAA college football game in Norman, Okla., Saturday, November 21, 2015.
“Our rule on the road is always to go get the win”, Patterson said. Without starting quarterback Trevone Boykin and star wide receiver Josh Doctson, TCU’s offense figured to be in trouble.
With Boykin out, redshirt freshman Foster Sawyer will start tonight against the No. 7 ranked Sooners.
Sawyer was pulled after his third interception with the Sooners leading 30-13 and Bram Kohlhausen replaced him. “It killed me”, he said. I haven’t given up on TJ, and I hope he gets a chance Friday to redeem himself. “We came here to win”. Aaron Green was impressive with 126 yards on 23 touches and a score, but TCU ultimately couldn’t make up for its lack of an aerial assault by pounding the ball.
If Boykin, who was a Heisman contender before his injury, can’t go Kohlhausen will likely get the nod, Patterson said. We just gave it our all. That’s what we’ve been taught to do.
Oklahoma inserted Trevor Knight in Mayfield’s place and the offense sputtered while the defense clung to the lead.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield is questionable for Saturday’s Oklahoma State game after he was shaken up by a helmet-to-helmet hit in the second quarter of the contest by linebacker Ty Summers. “I sure don’t know anything right now”, Stoops said.
By halftime, he admitted to trainers he had a headache.
“That threw us off in the second half”. Because his knee touched the ground, the ball was ruled dead at that spot, and the Horned Frogs received a huge break, taking over possession on the Oklahoma 26-yard line.
TCU gradually clawed back into it – and comfort turned to near panic for the 85,821 at Owen Field when TCU scored with 51 seconds left, then went for two. TCU coach Gary Patterson said a short upcoming practice week for next week’s Baylor game was one reason an overtime game with the Sooners would have been ill-advised. “It’s good and hopefully he’ll heal up well”.
