Toya Graham is now homeless after Michael accidentally started a house fire, burning down her kitchen.
“I was so angry with him that he had made a decision to do some harm to the police officers”, she said at the time. You try to be strong for your children.
Michael, 17, was home for the weekend from a job corps program and accidently caused the kitchen to catch fire Saturday when he was cooking chicken strips.
Toya Graham, the Baltimore woman dubbed “mom of the year” in 2015, is now homeless.
Graham first made headlines after spotting her son hurling rocks at police in protests for Freddie Gray in Baltimore.
The teen was home alone at the time and said he tried to stop the grease fire by throwing water on it.
“I had stepped away to the bathroom real quick”, Michael said.
The 43 year old single mother of five’s rise to fame came after video emerged of her smacking her son after she catching him participating in the Baltimore riots.
The family is now staying at a hotel on Route 40 while they want for a contractor to fix up the home and restore electric services, the Baltimore Sun reported. ‘Now, it’s like, what we’re going to do now?’
“It is a lot to take in when you are at work trying to keep a roof over your heard to come home to this”, she said.
Toya and her family have set up a GoFundMe page to help with housing and the loss of food and household items during the fire. So far, more than 60 people have raised almost $2,000 for the family in less than 16 hours.
The family is waiting for their landlord to get approval from a contractor to fix the house and allow them to move back in.
Her actions went viral and received a host of praise.
