Baltimore Orioles fall to Boston in game one of four
Machado isn’t the only one who’s temper runs hot though, as Porcello’s emotions have flared this season before too.
Porcello (21-4), the major league leader in wins, allowed four hits and no walks while striking out seven.
Depending on Toronto’s late game in Seattle, the Orioles would enter today no worse than tied for the two AL wild-card spots.
The good news is the Orioles maintained their one-game lead over the Blue Jays for the top Wild Card spot, thanks to Toronto’s split of a four-game set in Anaheim.
Gausman is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his past three starts, while Rodriguez is 0-1, 3.31 in his previous three outings. Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramirez was running from first base on the pitch, but Schoop fielded a ground ball right at him and tossed to shortstop J.J. Hardy in one snap motion to record the first half of an improbable double play.
Porcello started off strong, throwing three ideal innings that included a strike out and four ground outs.
The Giants’ lone run came on Kershaw’s wild pitch in the third inning. If he gets a hit in all four games in this series, it would be the longest hitting streak of his career at Camden Yards.
The Orioles’ Dylan Bundy gave up five runs and nine hits in five innings Monday, falling to 9-6 on the season. Estrada’s bid for a no-hitter was broken up by a Robinson Cano single. He is the third player in the last 50 seasons to hit eight home runs in a visiting park in a single season.
Did anyone have Rick Porcello or Kyle Hendricks as favorites to win their respective Cy Young awards at the beginning of the season?
Billy Burns helped him at the plate with three hits, two runs scored and a stolen base. The Dodgers won 2-1.
The Royals have won three straight, keeping their faint playoff hopes flickering with 12 games remaining.
Giancarlo Stanton homered in his first start since returning from disabled list before Christian Yelich and Derek Dietrich added RBI doubles in Miami’s 4-3 win against Washington. Clayton Richard allowed two runs while pitching into the seventh. The Nationals’ third straight loss leaves them with a magic number of five for winning the NL East. Adam Jones’s 28th home run of the season, hit with two outs in the eighth, was the last bit of consolation for the Orioles.
An inning later, the double-play prowess of the Orioles’ infield was on display. The outfielder was 13-for-25 with eight home runs and 15 RBI.
Homers by Addison Russell, Willson Contreras and Jason Heyward powered the Cubs past Cincinnati, 5-2. It also made a victor of Jason Hammel (15-9), who pitched seven solid innings.
The dominance that Betts has shown in Baltimore was first put on display when he homered three times in a Red Sox victory on May 31. Wil Myers opened the bottom of the fourth with a homer before Alexi Amarista provided a two-run single later in the inning to put the Padres ahead 3-0. The Birds settled for a series split, a disappointing result against a last-place Tampa Bay club that is 21 games under.500 this year. It was also nice to see the offense get something going against Bundy since the last time he pitched against us we couldn’t score a single run.
METS: Left-hander Steven Matz, who hasn’t pitched since August 14 because of a shoulder injury, went through fielding and running drills and is on schedule to return to the rotation this week.
