Baltimore police probe transport van sign | Reading Eagle
The city’s police department released a statement Friday that denounces the sign as “concerning and unacceptable”, the Associated Press reports.
WBAL reported that the photos were taken Tuesday near the Central District Police Station, though CNN reports that Baltimore police have been unable to verify their authenticity, but are looking into it.
A passerby took four photos of the sign and showed them to WBAL-TV. Gray’s death touched off protests and riots, and six Baltimore police officers have been charged in his death.
An internal investigation has been launched after images of a sign in a Baltimore police van went viral on social media.
‘We have recently become aware of the wording and have begun an internal investigation to determine all the circumstances surrounding its placement and to identify the person or persons responsible for its posting.’. It is unclear how long the message has been on the inside of a rear door of the van.
The blue letters on the side of the door are only visible from inside the van – raising questions about who put it there and exactly why.
Christine Abbott was one of those victims, and is suing the police department after she was badly injured from what she and her attorneys claim was an intentional rough ride. The photo stirs more debate following Freddie Gray’s death in April after suffering a fatal injury after being improperly secured in the back of a Baltimore police transport van.
