Baltimore Ravens headsets malfunction on final drive vs. Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals (5-2) maintained control in the NFC West. They head to Cleveland next week before getting to rest up for their bye in Week 9. Baltimore was coming off a loss to the 49ers, while Arizona fell to the Steelers in Week 6. Arizona started at the 10, then Lardarius Webb and Brynden Trawick each had pass-interference penalties to give the Cardinals extra shots at the end zone. Jones took over for an injured Michael Vick and proceeded to torch the Cardinals. The Ravens could not overcome mental mistakes and a very talented Cardinals’ team.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Bruce Arians wanted to show that his team could win a close game.
He finished with 122 yards on 18 carries and joined Ricky Watters as the only National Football League players with a 100-yard rushing game for three different teams.
Coach John Harbaugh said the Ravens had trouble with the communications system throughout the game, particularly in the final drive.
“The phones were going out”. Runners are always making an effort to go forward. The good thing is we got everything done fast. “(Offensive coordinator) Marc (Trestman) had yelled and we couldn’t get the personnel groups. Flacco couldn’t hear Mark.
“‘I don’t know why they were going out on that drive”, Harbaugh said.
Harbaugh threw an absolute nutty on the sideline, calling over each official one-by-one with an angry bent finger to berate them for ruining his grand plan.
On the other side of the ball, the Ravens’ offense seemed to get few opportunities, but took the a lot of them when given.
Though the Ravens came to within a touchdown of sending the game into overtime, the overall issue remains the same as it has in previous weeks. Nursing injuries to both hamstrings, Brown was active after being listed questionable, caught Carson Palmer’s first two passes and led the Cardinals in receiving on his team-high six targets.
“It’s tough”, Ravens running back Justin Forsett said.
Chris Johnson rolled to victory.
On that play, Johnson landed in nose tackle Brandon Williams’ lap but he didn’t hit the ground and the referees didn’t blow the play dead.
Buoyed by that play, Arizona moved 16 points clear with 8:13 left on the clock when Palmer and John Brown linked up for a four-yard score. “We played to the final whistle”.
As mentioned in the players to watch article, Drew Butler and Tyrann Mathieu for the Cardinals were the ones that you needed to keep your eyes on and they did not disappoint.
The only turnover of night, before Jefferson’s interception, led to a touchdown that put the Cardinals up 14-10 at the half and Arizona never trailed again.
There was yet another play the Ravens felt like the refs missed.
Fans have been amazed by what Joe Flacco has been able to accomplish with the weapons that have been left for him this year.
Flacco spotted Crockett Gilmore and tried to hit him over the middle. Tony Jefferson made the key interception as Flacco was looking for Gillmore again. In the end, they scored TDs on two of their four trips, and 50 percent in the red zone usually will win you games.
