Banged-up Jets pull out 28-23 victory over Jaguars
During the CBS broadcast of the game, a sideline reporter said Fitzpatrick told them during a production meeting that he probably wouldn’t wait to have surgery to fix the thumb, and the reporter speculated that Friday could make sense since the Jets play Thursday night. “There was a few back and forth in the game, certainly”.
Next up for the NY Jets is an AFC East showdown with the Buffalo Bills in a short Week 10.
“Just effort and finishing and form tackling at the end”, he said. “You look back at it, really, a lot of these were self-inflicted – the turnovers and the penalties at inopportune times”.
With Folk injured, the Jets went for it on fourth-and-3 from the Jaguars’ 25 in the first quarter. Eric Decker caught a 15-yard pass, setting up Chris Ivory’s 1-yard touchdown run that put the Jets up 14-3 with 43 seconds left in the opening quarter. Hurns had five catches for 122 yards and Allen Robinson caught six passes for 121 yards….
“This game was a big game and a must-win game for us”, cornerback Darrelle Revis said. Then, the punt returns, the 20-yarder. The Jets went three-and-out after Bortles’ fumble, but cornerback Nick Marshall fumbled the subsequent punt and tight end Kellen Davis recovered. That’s a notable deviation from the Idzik “era”, during which a talent-starved roster needed to do everything right to have a chance to win.
The Jaguars used two timeouts during the subsequent three-and-out, took over at the 50-yard-line following a punt and scored two plays later, when quarterback Blake Bortles threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Allen Hurns. A 45-yard gain by running back T.J. Yeldon gave Jacksonville a first-and-goal at the Jets 10-yard-line. But Williams got up and started running, which meant he was risking fumbling the ball back to the Jaguars. Bowles has impressed in leading the Jets to a 5-3 mark in the first half of the season, although he did have an uncharacteristic conservative moment in the first half Sunday against Jacksonville. This year, it’s usually one possession or two that makes the difference between winning or losing. For the record, Antonio Cromartie, it’s your job to stop the other team. Brandon Marshall, who leads the team with 50 catches for 686 yards, suffered an ankle injury against Oakland but is expected to play. Was head coach Todd Bowles simply looking for a way to get Cromartie out of there without embarrassing the proud veteran? We might find out Thursday.
The NY Jets staved off a late comeback attempt by the Jacksonville Jaguars to claim their fifth win of the season in their clash at MetLife Stadium. Center Nick Mangold (sore neck) also was forced to leave the game and starting right guard Willie Colon was inactive. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
“When you play with your hand taped up, you face a little bit of limitation, but the mechanics of quarterback look nearly the same”, Gailey said.
Despite his injury, Fitzpatrick started Sunday’s win over the Jaguars. Ryan Quigley hadn’t kicked field goals since high school, so although he was able to kick extra points, field goals were another story.
