Bangladesh arrests over Italian aid worker death
“We have arrested the four – two of them actively took part in the killing of Cesare Tavella – we will let you know the details later”, a police spokesman told PTI.
A Japanese farmer was also murdered by gunmen in northern Bangladesh less than a week after Tavella’s killing.
On 28 September, Cesare Tavella, 50, project manager of PROOFS (Profitable Opportunities for Food Security) of the Netherlands-based non-governmental organisation “ICCO Cooperation”, was shot by a few miscreants on road 90 of Gulshan-2 at Gulshan in Dhaka.
Islamic State terrorists have reportedly claimed the responsibility of shooting the Italian man, but government turned down the claim saying that there was no IS operation in Bangladesh.
The arrests are considered a major breakthrough for Bangladesh, which has been struggling to stem a rising tide of violence, including the murders of four atheist bloggers claimed by radical Islamist groups this year. They are still hunting for the alleged mastermind.
The killers also said they’d received half of the payment promised for the attack, according to Mia. “We have identified that so-called big brother”.
