Police have charged Bangladesh test cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife with torturing their former domestic servant, an 11-year-old girl.
In the charge sheet, the IO said the charges brought against them were primarily proved and the couple should be brought under trial under the Women & Children Repression Prevention Act.
While Hossain had lodged a complaint with the police about the girl’s disappearance, she was found with grievous injuries on her body on the streets in Dhaka.
Hossain and his wife face a maximum 14 years imprisonment in addition to financial penalties if they are found guilty of the charges, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
The incident involving Hossain, and his wife’s, physical assault on the girl known as Happy, dates back to September 2015. They’d usually give me leftovers or food that had gone bad’. He then took her to the local police station.
The couple went into hiding after police raided their house in September, leading officers to search various locations, including Hossain’s ancestral village and his father-in-law’s residence. The 29-year-old played 38 tests for Bangladesh and became the first player from his country to have his name added to the famous Lords honours board in London after a five-wicket haul against England in 2010.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has since suspended Hossain from all forms of cricket until further notice.
According to BBC News, the case will be heard on January 12.
Hossain handed himself in on 5 October.
