Banned Narine in Windies T20 squad
West Indies have called up Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo as well as Sunil Narine for the ICC World Twenty20 2016.
The tournament will start from the 8th of March to the 3rd of April. Gayle, Bravo and Narine will be playing for West Indies after a long time as their careers with their national team were offset by several controversies.
In 2012, Sammy captained a similar-looking squad to the title after they defeated hosts Sri Lanka in the final.
Mumbai: West Indies have taken a gamble by naming Sunil Narine in their squad for the World Twent20 tournament in March as the off-spinner is now suspended from bowling in global cricket due to an illegal action. With the confidence from winning the tournament in Sri Lanka four years ago, it is going to take a good side to knock the West Indies off once the tournament commences, with all eyes over the next month on Narine whether his action is passed.
Chris Gayle’s relationship with the West Indies Cricket Board has been a rough one as he has at several occasions pulled out of the team owing to financial problems. Andre Fletcher and Jerome Taylor are the two other players who were not part of the 2012 squad.
The squad features some outstanding T20 specialists Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo and Andre Russell, who has done really well in the T20 format for various franchises across the world. Gayle has been controversial in more ways than one but has now returned to play for West Indies.
The Windies are ranked Number One on the ICC Twenty20 table.
The squad will assemble in the United Arab Emirates for a training camp from February 22, and will travel to India on March 7 for warm-up matches against India and Australia. They are part of Group 1 of the Super 10 stage.
West Indies name five all-rounders in the team, with Jason Holder, Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard picked alongside Sammy.
