Bannon reveals what makes him ‘proudest’ about Trump
As the conference was going on, and amid rumors of a planned walkout during his speech, Trump canceled his scheduled appearance there at the last minute, citing campaign commitments in the Midwest. He added that “we have to stick together as a team” to use Trump’s victory as an “opportunity” and to keep the president in office for eight years.
While he acknowledged gaps between different factions of conservatism, Bannon described a united front behind a “new political order”. Trump has often suggested he doesn’t prioritize the social issues many conservatives elevate, and his proposal for a massive infrastructure bill has cast doubts about his commitment to curb government spending.
Portage County Tea Party executive Director Tom Zawistowski said Tea Party activists went from being insurgents to controlling the White House and Congress.
Another speaker Thursday was Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser in the Trump administration, who said “Tomorrow, this will be TPAC” – in replacing the “C” in the acronym with “T” for Trump.
Mr. Bannon said that Mr. Trump is regularly approached by individuals who try and get him to “waver”, only for them to be rebuffed. That led to chants of “Trump! Trump! Trump!” as Bannon and Priebus made a joint appearance on stage.
And while he admitted he didn’t agree philosophically with everyone in the White House or GOP, he argued conservatives, libertarians and right-wing populists need to hang together – and stand behind Trump. Something that according to Priebus didn’t just start since Trump’s inauguration, but has been evident by the fact media didn’t see Trump’s popularity ahead of the elections.
Perhaps they could start with President Donald Trump saying something, directly to the so-called “alt-right”.
Spencer told TPM he chose to show up when he learned one of the conference’s organizers would be giving a speech declaring that the alt right is not welcoming in the conservative tent.
US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will speak at 12:50 pm.
“I think he’ll do fantastic with the economy, I think he’ll well with the immigration problem that we have in this country”, one woman said.
Independent agencies have become an unaccountable “fourth branch of government” that liberals use to accomplish what they can not do by legislation, Bannon said.
“We are glad Facebook agreed to be at CPAC and to acknowledge the importance of conservatives to their company, and we continue to work with them on issues important to conservatives”, he said.
Trump campaigned on a platform to overhaul American trade relations and take a more protectionist stance.
He talked about being stunned after getting outside of the Washington echo chamber and back to his home of Wisconsin and hearing person after person telling him they were for Trump shortly after he announced in 2015.
