Barack Obama says reality will force Donald Trump to adjust his approach
“We want America to succeed under the next president just as it did under your leadership”, he told Mr. Obama.
But Obama did suggest that there may be limits to his silence.
Obama said he was “very clear about the strong differences we had on policy”. “I’ve seen that for all of them, even the best ones, that you end up confronting the realities and I think that is a good thing, that is interesting”, Obama said.
But Obama warned that he wouldn’t remain silent if he felt Trump’s administration was attacking American values.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday reportedly pledged to open the economy further for free trade.
Furthermore, the summit recognized an increase in uneven economic growth. It was apparent the two leaders didn’t resolve their well-known differences, which include accusations by the USA that Russians hacked into the American election system and Democratic Party files this year in an attempt to influence the presidential election. “There is real concern that the U.S.is withdrawing from its traditional role”.
President Obama also stressed the importance of the U.S. influence in the world, saying that no other country is able to “fill the void”.
He added that to combat those tendencies, the leaders in Lima including U.S. President Barack Obama, Russias Vladimir Putin and Chinas Xi Jinping chose to move forward with examining the prospects for a free trade area, along with the Trans-Pacific Partnership as a transitional step toward such an overarching pact. Obama has raised concerns directly to Putin ahead of the election about Russian hacking, and the United States also registered complaints through a hotline set up to avert accidental nuclear war.
On Sunday, South Korea’s Deputy National Security Adviser Cho Tae-yong returned to Seoul, and told reporters that after meeting with USA advisers he expects a tougher North Korea policy under a Trump administration, according to Yonhap.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said the “tremendous despair” triggered by Mr Trump’s policies must not be allowed to slow down economic integration in the world.
The outgoing president also said that Trump’s campaign rhetorics were not as easy to fulfil as he thought. “We hope he is part of the program”.
“At this stage, we’re going to need to have a change in how all parties think about this”.
He said other world leaders at the summit made clear they want to move ahead with the agreement, and without the USA it will be a weaker deal.
Peru said that it had started negotiations to join RCEP last week and Chile also confirmed that it had expressed an interest in joining.
The official communique said the leaders agreed to continue efforts to advance an Asia-Pacific free trade area, following the release of a cost benefits study.
In a region hungry for trade, Trump’s anti-trade stance has left even longtime USA allies looking to a once unlikely place to fill the void: China, which was excluded from TPP. “You are beginning to see that”.
Meeting with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Obama said he had no doubt the close and important U.S. Last year, 89% of Mexican exports were from manufacturing, compared with 38% in 1985, he said. “Indeed they have a veto over what the administration might propose”, Trudeau said.
