Barbara Bush Takes Jab at Trump in New Video
The Bush campaign has long wrestled with a campaign role for the former president, wary of his low public approval ratings among the general electorate.
Though the video, for now, is planned for the internet only, Bush accidentally announced it at his town hall Thursday night before his campaign had officially released it.
The New Republic’s Jeet Heer said in response, “There have been many sad moments in Jeb Bush’s ill-fated campaign, but this is surely one of the most pathetic”.
Now, though, things aren’t so simpatico between the Bushes and Cruz – and not only because one of the Texas senator’s GOP presidential primary competitors is Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida. “I have higher expectations of myself, because I have some experience in knowing this is a really important job and if you can’t get through the primary the right way, then how are you going to be dealing with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, how do you deal with [Chinese President] Xi”.
“I’ve given it a lot of thought”, he said, adding that he was reading Jon Meacham’s book about “my dad” – “Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush”.
Jeb Bush is a fine candidate, out of “all the people running”?
On the surface, it seems like she’s not totally convinced he’s the man for the job. Most of the polls show he’s the most popular Republican in the country and I would love to have his support – he wants to help. “The answer was no as the sacrifice for his family was huge”, she writes.
Barbara Bush’s hand-written letter is being distributed to voters in Iowa, New Hampshire and SC. “All advertising hopefully accomplishes people moving toward your cause”, he said.
“It’s good to get an endorsement from your mother”. She told C-SPAN in 2014 that “There’s no question in my mind that Jeb is the best-qualified person to run for president, but I hope he won’t”. Many Republican operatives expect the 43rd president to make an appearance on behalf of his brother in SC, where his popularity has barely waned.
“She is without political enemies and without political baggage”, said former New Hampshire GOP Chairman Fergus Cullen an interview earlier this week, before the video was made known. Barbara Bush, 90, is famously outspoken on behalf of her politically active kin: In 1984, after her husband George H.W. Bush faced Geraldine Ferraro in a vice presidential debate, she quipped that she wanted to call the first woman on a presidential ticket “a word that rhymes with rich”. Through his office, George P. Bush declined to comment for this story, but he has said he still considers Cruz a friend – even if he’s now campaigning for his dad.
