Barbie’s expands collection to include ‘tall, curvy and petite’ dolls
One of the girls in the video said, “It’s important for Barbie to look different, like real people in the world”. The dolls will be sold in stores later in 2016.
The doll has changed in some ways already, including new skin tones and looks were added past year.
The three new body types for barbie are featured in the doll’s 2016 Fashionistas line.
The Time magazine story “Barbie’s Got a New Body”, published Thursday, goes behind the scenes at Mattel, covering company thinking about redesigning the doll as well as focus group responses to the new toys.
The new designs also feature a variety of skin tones, eye colours and hair styles. Mattel’s Michelle Chidoni told Glamour that Barbie “was never created to replicate the female body”, but was rather “a vehicle for play”.
It’s about time! Last year Mattel introduced almost two dozen “Fashionista” dolls with different skin colors, facial structures, hairstyles, hair colors, and eye colors.
Barbie’s figure has come under fire for years, with critics arguing it set an unrealistic body image for girls.
Barbie is more than just a plastic doll – she’s an icon who has stood the test of time.
Dolls with the new bodies are available for preorder at shop.mattel.com and will ship in February.
As Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice president and global general manager for Barbie, said in a statement: “These new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them”.
Barbie is handsome – she is made to be – and now kids can grow up with the understanding that a fuller size doesn’t mean unhappiness or lack of beauty. They also have new face shapes and skin tones.
The new and improved Barbie is here, and she looks fantastic!
But as American ideals of beauty have evolved to embrace the bootylicious bodies of Beyonce, the Kardashians and Jennifer Lopez, Barbie sales have sunk 20% from 2012 to 2014.
