Barcelona always believed the could beat PSG
In the next 25 minutes, they were struggling – Paris Saint-Germain controlled the game.
Neymar was ecstatic to have played his part in Barcelona‘s record-breaking Champions League comeback against PSG, where he scored two and set up Sergi Roberto for the victor. No one thought we could score three goals in ten minutes but only a team like Barcelona can do it.
No team had ever come back from a 4-0 first-leg deficit in the UEFA Champions League before Tuesday night. This is even more unreal.
Barcelona then entered the semi-finals with a win over Paris Saint-Germain.
It is a huge task for Barcelona and an early goal for PSG would rapidly pinch their bubble, but morale is high and if Iniesta, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Neymar and company have a good night and the crowd gets behind them, there could still be a long way to go in the tie. USA national team member Christian Pulisic, still just 18, also found the back of the net for the Bundesliga side.
Three minutes after the break it was 3-0 as Thomas Meunier brought Neymar down in the PSG box. A precious PSG away goal left their hosts needing to score three more in 28 minutes.
The coach was also praised in the Spanish media, with daily Marca describing his tactical preparation as “the ideal plan”, while Sport highlighted “Luis Enrique’s three decisions that made the comeback possible”.
The normally mild-mannered Lionel Messi.
If Barca – through impassioned rallying calls from Luis Enrique, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique – had managed to convince themselves, their supporters and the media they were capable of ac historic comeback, then they’d managed to convince PSG, too.
It was as if the game was over.
Roberto did not start the second leg, with Enrique opting for Brazilian midfielder Rafinha, but he came off the bench late in the second half to score the decisive sixth goal. Neymar netted a free-kick in the 88th-minute and found the back of the net again, this time from the spot in the 91st minute to ignite Barcelona’s hopes.
To complete his hat-trick, he put down his name on the scoresheet once again, 5 minutes before the end. With the time clicking away, Sergi would become the hero of Barcelona, tapping in a free kick from Neymar to prevent elimination!
Qatar-backed PSG have invested heavily in a squad created to compete at the highest level, yet once again they were found wanting against the very best and were eliminated by Barcelona in the knockout stages for the third time in five years. With Carlo Ancelotti at the helm, whose three Champions League titles is a joint record, Bayern look to have every chance going into the final eight.
