Barcelona pull off the greatest comebacks in Champions League history
Now Barcelona can be added to the list of teams to overcome what appeared to be an insurmountable deficit to win.
Barcelona fans’ celebrations in the aftermath of their team’s 6-1 UEFA Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain were so forceful, they caused a minor natural disaster Wednesday at Nou Camp, according to The Press Association.
Even reporters in the press box couldn’t contain themselves after the shocking ending.
After a hard 4:0 loss against PSG in first leg of UEFA Champions League round of 16, Barcelona managed to bounce back in last four games and they are as ready as they can be to rock the mountain.
Perhaps ominously, PSG’s Qatari president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, said: “There can be no excuses, we did not play in the first half”. One day we will abdicate, but we’re still there.
Most stunningly, Barcelona needed – and then scored – three goals in the final seven minutes to win the match. Neymar stepped up to the line and slotted the ball home, putting the score at 4-1 and 5-5 on aggregate.
Three goals in seven minutes of game time is insane at any time in soccer. That tied things at 5-5 on aggregate, but PSG still held the all-important tie-breaker.
And that’s the comeback they pulled off thanks to Sergi Roberto.
Gabon worldwide Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a hat-trick while Christian Pulisic scored the other goal as the 1997 European champions progressed 4-1 on aggregate. Barcelona still needed two goals but Neymar wasn’t beaten and when Suarez was pushed over in the area, the Brazilian slammed home the penalty. This time, Neymar stepped to the spot instead of Messi and cooly converted to draw the overall scoreline at 5-5.
“You have become legends”, headlined the Barcelona Sport daily while El Munda spoke of the ‘miracle of a lifetime’.
The players appear to agree.
On Wednesday, Barcelona put together one of the more incredible displays we’ll ever see in Champions League soccer.
“If they can score four, we can score six”, Luis Enrique had said before the second leg. However Edinson Cavani’s away goal for PSG just after the hour mark looked to be a fatal blow to the home team’s chances. We never lost it.
