Bargain 25p EasyFoodstore shuts down after stocks run out
After just one day of being shut down, easyFoodStore announced this morning that the store were back up and running.
On Thursday (February 4) the store had to close, in order to restock and keep up with high demand for the budget items.
EasyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has been forced to temporarily close his grocery store venture after it generated “too much interest”.
A spokesman said: “The store is now open again (today Friday 5th of February 16) and trading business as usual with long lines of customers queuing outside”.
The EasyFoodstore in Park Royal, north-west London, attributes its closure to “the huge publicity” their 25p promotion has attracted. The shop, located on Park Royal West, just off the North Circular Road, in London’s zone three, first opened its doors last week.
The retailer’s suppliers had been “unable to meet the demand“, according to a notice posted on the store’s website. “Just food honestly priced”, said it still plans to sell its items for 25p each throughout February as an introductory offer.
Prices will then go up but are expected to remain very low. A whole range of canned, dried, and frozen groceries were available to customers, including coffee, tomato soup, SpaghettiOs, cake, and pizza.
The shop follows Sir Stelios’ failed attempts to open a similar business in Croydon. On Twitter, many posted saying the store “looked like a food bank”.
Sir Stelios is hoping the pilot store will be a recipe for success and will become as popular as budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl.
Haji-Ioannou, who has run food initiatives through a charitable organisation in Greece and Cyprus, said: “This is another way the easy brand can serve the less well-off”.
