Barnes triples, singles in 9-5 loss to Padres
The San Diego Padres made the most of their scoring chances on Friday as they beat the Rockies in Colorado.
The San Diego Padres appeared to be a staff constructed to contend in the National League West however they’re preventing simply to succeed in.500. Kemp completed the feat with a ninth-inning triple as the Padres won for the third time in four games. Nolan Arenado hit a home run and D.J. LeMahieu and Brandon Barnes each had two hits as the Rockies scored five runs on 11 hits. Doesn’t matter if the hit was a routine fly that happened to fall in because of a miscommunication in the outfield.
Reliever Ken Roberts (0-1), called up from Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day, took the loss. He singled to lead off the third and doubled home a run with two outs in the seventh off Rafael Betancourt to give San Diego a 5-4 lead.
“I like home runs, but that was my first cycle”, Kemp said.
“It’s hard to believe, all those great hitters that have been here, like Tony Gwynn and all those guys, haven’t been able to get a hit for a cycle”, Kemp told the Union-Tribune. Padres RF Matt Kemp entered Friday with a.302/.364/.581 slash line in 138 career games against the Rockies with 36 doubles, 31 homers and 112 RBIs – the highest against any opponent. Kemp delivered in his last at-bat, tripling to, you guessed it, center field to drive in his fourth run of the night.
Typically a team that dominates at home regardless of how well the season is going, the Rockies have struggled this year at Coors, going just 25-29 at home.
“(Kemp) showed tonight why he is the player he is”, interim manager Pat Murphy said. Rockies LHP Boone Logan (left elbow inflammation) was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Wednesday.
Rockies: 1B Justin Morneau (cervical strain and concussion symptoms) took batting practice Friday.
He’s hoping to be back this season. “We’ll see”. The 24-year-old is 3-10 with a 5.90 ERA this season.
“I don’t think they are exhausted, work-wise or innings-wise”, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of his relievers. “It’s just not been consistent enough”.
