Barrett, No. 2 Ohio State charge past No. 8 Wisconsin in OT
Barrett ran in another score then hit Noah Brown with a 7-yard TD in overtime, as Ohio State wound up finishing with 411 yards of total offense.
“In that kind of environment, our quarterback was not playing well”, Meyer said of J.T. Barrett. In the third quarter Cichy was able to put pressure on Barrett and ultimately get a sack on him in the fourth quarter.
UW has found success with end-around handoffs to wide receiver Jazz Peavy this season, but the Badgers utilized that play Saturday much more than in the first five games of the year.
Nebraska is the only undefeated team left in the Big Ten West, but the Cornhuskers still have not jumped the Badgers in our power ranking. But during a brief downpour, safety D’Cota Dixon picked off Barrett’s pass in the end zone at the 9:17 mark. That was Barrett’s 88th career touchdown, tying him with Braxton Miller for the most in school history. The Spartans have the worst running game in the conference and the second-worst pass defense, both pretty stunning considering what the program has built its reputation on.
His first run went for 12 yards during an opening drive that ended with a 46-yard field goal from Andrew Endicott. As they happened, Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said he thought his team missed a key chance to bury Ohio State.
Clement was the catalyst on that scoring drive. Officials overturned the fumble after a review that determined not only did Worley step out of bounds, but the ball also touched Clement’s foot out of bounds. If ‘Bama plays like that, and it essentially has for all but the first 25 minutes at Ole Miss on September 17, the coming hand-wringing about playoff teams won’t matter too much, because the Tide are taking home the trophy on the second Monday of January.
The Badgers’ offense shined with a tremendous performance by RB Corey Clement who on 25 rushes delivered with a fantastic 164 yard game. Arkansas earned a 34-30 win Saturday, improving to 4-2 during the past six games against ranked teams. They spent nearly ten minutes playing defense in the third quarter, which was a notable change from the second quarter, which saw Wisconsin’s defense on the field for under five minutes.
Barrett completed 6 of 14 passes for 81 yards and rushed for a team-leading 52. While Miller was the most unsafe running quarterback Ohio State has had since Cornelius Green, Barrett is the most reliable. The true freshman was nursing an injury before the Maryland game and had to come out in the second half.
All that being said, with a lot of good teams already possessing two losses, it seems more likely than not that four of Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, Washington, Texas A&M, Louisville, and Nebraska will make up the playoff.
Michigan State’s last win is against Notre Dame, and it turns out the Fighting Irish aren’t any good, either. The Buckeyes were down 16-6 early in the 2nd half but the Buckeyes would catch fire going into the 2nd half and in the end Ohio State would be victorious in the end with a fantastic defensive stop in over time. It’s hard to imagine after combining to go 22-5 last season, the Irish and Spartans have now combined to lose nine games this season and could wind up staying home this postseason for the first time since 2009 (Notre Dame) and 2006 (Michigan State). Wisconsin has an 8-2 record after a bye week dating to 2009.
WIS-J.Peavy 24 yard pass from Hornibrook (Endicott kick), 6:17.
OSU-Durbin 31 yard field goal, 3:57. Baylor 10. Wisconsin 11. Even in this game, Barrett had 21 carries, while Mike Weber and Samuel combined for 23.
The Mountaineers (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) held Texas Tech (3-3, 1-2) to its lowest offensive output this season, just 379 yards, and harassed quarterback Patrick Mahomes most of the day.
