Barry Williams remembers TV mom, teen crush on Florence Henderson
After the filming of the last season of The Brady Bunch in 1979, Florence Henderson went on to appear in several movies and TV shows that spanned many genres.
But by far her best-known role was that of Carol Brady, which aired from 1969 to 1974 in its original format and never really went away. “I learned a lot about how to be in public from her”.
The singer-turned-actress then took her talents to television.
She was back 40 years later as a co-host of Later Today. She was 82 at the time of her passing.
Viewers believed it too, which is why she became so beloved.
Florence Agnes Henderson was born February 14, 1934, in Dale, Indiana, the youngest of 10 children.
She took me to NY for Christmases with her family.
It’s also why fans were stunned when Henderson revealed personal info, including the fact that as an octogenarian, she had a “friend with benefits”.
And just as she reframed how society saw single moms, she also showed how full life can be for an octogenarian. After the show ended, he went on to become a businessman and enjoyed a semi-resurgence in Hollywood throughout the 2000s by appearing on reality shows including “Celebrity Family Feud”.
While Williams says Henderson had a maternal quality about her, off-screen, he mainly remembers her as a gracious friend. She was just 100% fun and professional.
For eight years she commuted to Nashville to conduct a cooking and talk series, Country Kitchen, on The Nashville Network.
McCormick also posted a photo of herself with her TV mom at a recent Dancing with the Stars taping in which they spoofed their classic 1970s sitcom.
And she certainly had some glamorous tales to tell, Applegate recalled.
Henderson temporarily lost her hearing in the 1960s as the result of a hereditary condition that was corrected by surgery. And Florence did that. Her glass was always half full.
She said: “She’ll be remembered as a real class act – someone with so much talent”. She just brought a smile to everyone’s heart.
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II were so impressed they made her the female lead in a 1952 road tour of Oklahoma!. She will be loved forever. “There’s no negative anything out there, and that’s a very rare thing in this industry”, she said.
And now in light of the death of Florence Henderson, the actress who played Carol Brady, they’re showing us again how close they are.
As Pressman’s telephone continued ringing, the woman who has worked with Henderson for 43 years – starting as her personal assistant – said the actress was “the most vibrant, beautiful-inside-and-out person I’ve ever known in my entire life”. “She remains more than just another “’80s Kids Remember” nostalgia achievement, because she never peaked: “She kept rocking, and shocking, and surprising us at every turn with her clear-eyed IN values and street-savvy show business know-how.
