Bastian Schweinsteiger reacts on Twitter as Man Utd beat Derby
Goals from Wayne Rooney, Daley Blind and Juan Mata put the 11-times FA Cup winners through, with second-tier Derby only briefly threatening a shock when George Thorne equalised shortly before the break at a noisy Pride Park.
Despite coming under increasing pressure following last week’s 1-0 home defeat to Southampton, Van Gaal is confident he still has the faith of United’s hierarchy.
“It was maybe better than we had trained”. “I think as a defender you are not happy if you have to play against him at the moment”, the Dutchman said of the United star.
But the 64-year-old former Holland boss claims he has no intention of walking away and is furious at how his situation is being portrayed in the press. “We haven’t won it for a long time so we dream of it [but] after two wins you can’t say that we will win it”.
He said: “I don’t think it has anything to do with the Premier League, it is the FA Cup”.
Derby head coach Paul Clement, twice an FA Cup victor with Chelsea when assistant coach to Guus Hiddink and then Carlo Ancelotti, could take plenty of positives from his team’s performance and quickly turned his attention to getting the Rams’ Championship promotion challenge back on track.
Their only win in five matches this year was a 2-1 victory over Hartlepool in the last round of the Cup.
“It is unbelievable and still they come to look at “boring” Manchester United. He gets into great positions and I have said before that he is going to be a great striker”.
One thing is for sure, van Gaal certainly isn’t ready to leave just yet.
