Baton Rouge flooding: 2 die in bus crash on way to help
“Thirty-five to forty people on the bus all were transported with minor to moderate injuries”.
A fire truck and two vehicles were on the shoulder of I-10 because of an earlier accident involving a pick-up truck.
Investigators said a charter bus headed to Baton Rouge was westbound on I-10 when it also lost control, for reasons unknown, and struck the fire department’s ladder truck.
According to ABC, the bus was traveling down the interstate when it hit the three firefighters and vehicles. Rodriguez, who is from Honduras, was in the USA illegally, the network reported, citing Matey.
“It is heartbreaking, especially after this same group of individuals helped to guide St. John the Baptist Parish safely through Hurricane Isaac, the February tornado and the flood event last week”, she added. Police said they believe the workers were in the US illegally and all were taken to local area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. Each passenger was injured and taken to area hospitals. A second person in a Toyota Camry that was also hit has also died in the crash.
The second victim was killed inside another auto hit by the bus, police said.
Denis Rodriguez was identified as the driver of the charter bus.
All the riders aboard the bus were injured from the crash, Melissa Matey, a spokeswoman for the Louisiana State Police said.
The bus involved in the crash was filled with people on the way to help with Louisiana flood relief, according to WWL-TV. He remains at a hospital and is being monitored by state troopers.
Criminal charges are pending for Rodriguez, of Honduras.
