The BoM stated that the destructive winds were among the fastest ever recorded in Sydney and which have now proceeded offshore from Bondi Beach after hitting Kurnell.
A severe weather warning was issued for areas north of Sydney as the storm moved up the coast.
Emergency services are responding to multiple reports of building collapses, including businesses and residential properties.
The warning came at 10.30am as the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) confirmed wind gusts greater than 200km/h at Kurnell.
