Bayern Munich resumes Bundesliga with 2-1 win at Hamburg
A brace from Robert Lewandowski ensured Bayern Munich got off to a winning start in 2016 after they beat Hamburg 2-1 at the Volksparkstadion on Friday. The Poland striker claimed his second in the 61st, when he deflected Mueller’s volley past the helpless Adler, eight minutes after Aaron Hunt’s free kick somehow found its way in for Hamburg.
Lewandowski restored Bayern’s lead in the 61st minute, deflecting Mueller’s shot and wrong-footing keeper Rene Adler to take his Bundesliga goal tally for the season to 17, one behind Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
As well as the Red Devils, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also believed to be considering a possible reunion with his former Borussia Dortmund striker.
Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia, who was in his first stint in charge when the side last defeated Bayern on September 26, 2009, was furious that his team was left empty-handed despite limiting the visitors’ chances.
The Bavarian champions would win that game in imperious fashion, taking the match by a score of 5-0 and have not looked back since in their pursuit of a fourth successive Bundesliga crown.
Things went from bad to worse for Bayern as Germany centre-back Jerome Boateng called to be replaced after appearing to injure his right groin in a tackle.
Muller said: “We realised that when you play here nothing is given easily. We’ll improve from game to game”. “We knew we weren’t at our best level but we knew we were at a level where we could compete and win the game”.
Despite interest from a host of Premier League giants, Beckenbauer believes Lewandowski could complete a move to the Spanish capital.
