Baylor Names Jim Grobe Interim Football Coach
Baylor has hired former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe to coach the Bears this upcoming season, according to the school’s 247Sports website.
The announcement of McCaw’s resignation came a little more than an hour after Baylor hired former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe to replace the ousted Art Briles.
Grobe, a native of Huntington, West Virginia, coached at OH from 1995 to 2000 and Wake Forest from 2001 to 2013.
Considering Grobe, 64, has been out the past two seasons, he probably felt this was the sort of short-term job he could do for the time being.
“As a coach, winning is important”.
Baylor is in a hard spot after firing Art Briles for alleged misconduct surrounding Title IX investigations of his players.
“It is an honor for me to have the opportunity to join the Baylor football program during this important time”, Grobe said. He went to a total of 5 bowl games during his 13 seasons, including three consecutive appearances from 2006 through 2008.
“We understand and accept this hard decision by Ian McCaw to resign as Athletic Director and are grateful for his service to Baylor University”.
During his time at Wake Forest, Grobe earned a reputation as one of the most respected coaches in the country on and off the field. The rest of Baylor’s football staff is expected to remain in place this season.
The Baylor baseball team also claimed a Big 12 Championship in the 2011 season.
But both men left the university after a report last Thursday identified repeated failures to protect female students or to follow up on accusations of sexual assault, particularly with regard to football players.
McCaw will forever be linked to Art Briles. He served an eight-year term (2006-13) as chair of the organization’s ethics committee. “The guy was the chairman of the AFCA Ethics Committee and should know full well what he’s getting into since he’s tight with Grant Teaff, the godfather of Baylor football”.
Before taking over at Wake in 2001, he coached Ohio University for six years.
