Baylor’s handling of Sam Ukwuachu’s assault case is being questioned
The woman, who has since transferred and is playing soccer at another university in Texas, testified Ukwuachu assaulted her at his apartment and that she yelled “no” and screamed during the assault, according to the reports. In recent years we have joined university efforts nationally to prevent campus violence against women and sexual assault, to actively support survivors of sexual assault with compassion and care, and to take action against perpetrators.
Baylor said in a statement released to the Tribune on Thursday night that it is committed to “maintaining a safe and caring community”.
We are jumping right into the punishment phase because some witnesses from out of state need to catch planes.
Ukwuachu was a Freshman All-American at Boise State in 2012 before he was dismissed from the Broncos program for undisclosed reasons. It said that according to Ukwuachu, the Baylor coaches “knew everything” that happened at Boise.
Ukwuachu graduated from Baylor this past spring and he is a graduate of Pearland High School.
Jury selection in Ukwuachu’s trial began Monday, and during in limine motions to determine what evidence would be admissible, assistant district attorney Hilary Laborde, who is prosecuting the case, told 54th District Judge Matt Johnson that Baylor’s own investigation into the accusations against Ukwuachu involved interviewing just Ukwuachu, his accuser, and one friend of each, and that the school never saw the rape kit collected by the sexual assault nurse examiner. The Herald-Tribune reported an ex-girlfriend testified Ukwuachu punched her in the head more than once and choked her. She also claimed he physically restrained her from leaving and had a violent temper.
“Ukwuachu is a guy we’re expecting to be back”, Bennett said. “That gives us probably five or six guys we can play at end”.
Ukwuachu allegedly raped an 18-year-old Baylor female student in October, 2013, after he had transferred to the Bears football team. “So, I like the way we’ve handled it as a university, an athletic department and a football program”.
Earlier Thursday, a report from Texas Monthly alleged the case was mishandled by Baylor and authorities.
That is the biggest question arising from the incident.
