Baylor WR Coleman to enter National Football League draft
Down 20-0 and with the emergency QB in the game, Baylor basically ditched the offense that has brought us out of the Dark Ages and is as synonymous with our program as the colors green and gold, and went to a throwback single-wing attack. You look at it – we go beat Oklahoma, and then you bounce back and go on the road and go beat Baylor.
To make matters worse, sophomore quarterback Chris Johnson took a vicious hit on the first play from scrimmage, after the ensuing kickoff.
Just a few weeks ago, we would all watch a Baylor Bears game and marvel at how powerful their offense was. Swoopes made it 17-0 with an uncontested run to the outside from nine yards out. Jefferson was held to a 1-yard gain on third down, and Art Briles went for it on fourth-and-4 with 2:35 left. Baylor had more total yards and first downs than Texas, but two interceptions and two fumbles meant the Bears were playing catch up all afternoon.
The Longhorns, though, went three-and-out and punted it away with 1:34 left and the Bears without any timeouts left.
Texas survived a Baylor comeback to hold on for a 23-17 win. Paul Boyette stuffed a Baylor run for a 2-yard loss, making it fourth-and-3 from Baylor’s 49 with 32 seconds left.
Hawthorne wasn’t comfortable throwing the ball. Several 5-7 teams will be receiving special bowl invitations this year, but Texas is not expected to receive one because its graduation rates aren’t as high as other 5-7 candidates.
Alabama leads Florida 12-7 at the half of the SEC Championship in what was simultaneously one of the most and least eventful halves of football you’ll see this season.
Instead of Hawthorne, it was Jefferson that ended up trying the desperation “Hail Mary” pass on the game’s final play.
Treon Harris completed 6-of-12 passes for 84 yards, while Florida rushers combined for zero yards on 14 credited carries. Needing a touchdown to win, the Bears marched 45 yards to the Texas 46-yard line before the Longhorns stopped Hawthorne and company as time expired. Linebacker Anthony Wheeler recovered for Texas at the Baylor 18. Baylor had two streaks broken in the last three games, including a 20-game home winning streak with a loss to Oklahoma, and a 12-game winning streak against opponents from Texas with the loss to TCU.
“We had some turnovers here and there, but we knew we were going to have to run the ball to have a chance to win”, said senior All-American tackle Spencer Drango.
