BBMP election: BJP is still leading in the elections
The JD (S) won in 14 and independents in 8 wards, respectively.
BJP candidate Bharati Ramachandra was declared elected unopposed earlier from Hongasandra (ward 189) after Congress candidate K. Maheshwari submitted a fake caste certificate.
When asked whether Congress would re-consider its proposal to trifurcate the BBMP, the KPCC president said that the proposal would be discussed again. “Clearly none of these allegations have made an impact on voters”, said a BJP source from Bangalore.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained its lead in the Bengaluru civic corporation’s election as the counting of votes crossed the half-way mark in 197 wards across the city on Tuesday.
“This is the first time in 30 years that the incumbent party has won the BBMP elections”.
Modi thanked the tech city for making it a three-in-a-row for the BJP, after the party’s recent civic poll victories in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan that came in the backdrop of the Lalit Modi controversy.
With the BJP emerging as the single largest party in the Bengaluru municipal corporation polls, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the election’s outcome has disappointed him and contended that it was not a referendum of his performance.
In other tweets on the hashtag BBMPREsults, he said, “I congratulate Bng City BJP Unit, #KarnatakaBJP, all Party Workers and Leaders for the hard work that they have put in”.
The Congress went into the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike polls under the shadow of a massive corruption scandal at the state Lokayukta.
“It’s important that the council looks at the report, picks out what is in its court or what it believes the state government must do to strengthen the BBMP and get it done”, Viswanathan said.
The elections were held across 6,733 polling stations on August 22.
With 50 percent of the wards reserved for women, political parties fielded wives or women relatives of former corporators in many wards.
The candidates are from Congress, BJP, JD(S), SP, BSP, CPI and CPI (M), while AIMIM is for the first time contesting from 30 seats.
