Bears cut Jay Cutler with Mike Glennon coming aboard
“I appreciate Jay’s professionalism throughout this process and throughout my two years with him here in Chicago”, Bears general manager Ryan Pace said in a statement. I’m hoping for the best, but I’m not getting my hopes up.
That leaves Cleveland, Houston, San Francisco, Buffalo and the Jets. He’ll still cost them $2 million against the cap this season.
After the Bucs’ designated starter in 2013, Josh Freeman, melted down and soon got cut, the green string-bean Glennon (he’s a shade over 6-foot-7 and weighed 225 then) started Tampa Bay’s final 13 games.
However, the desire to start and promise of more money certainly weighed heavily on his decision to decline the generous offer, and has ultimately lead us all to this place. With him now on the open market, the New York Jets have expressed interest in signing him. Bears’ head coach John Fox has never been a huge fan of Cutler and the Bears are signing Bucs’ backup QB Mike Glennon for over $40M and three years. The total dollars don’t matter in National Football League deals as much as the hard commitment and to what extent it constrains future flexibility. That was Cutler’s last playoff game with the Bears. That not-so-dynamic duo has bungled the quarterback position from the start. He played under six different offensive coordinators in eight seasons.
The Bears are releasing the veteran quarterback with Mike Glennon set to join the team on a three-year contract, a person with knowledge of the move told USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Pelissero.
Demps was signed during training camp before the 2015 season and spent two years during his latest stint with the Texans, both on one-year deals that he has outperformed.
Unfortunately for the Bears, Gase did too good a job. But considering the Jets’ limited other options this offseason for adding a quarterback, Cutler wouldn’t be the worst possible addition. At just 27 years old, Glennon is just entering his prime, and with proper coaching, he could improve dramatically.
He is coming off a 2016 season in which he played just five games because of a shoulder injury.
Cutler struggled with interceptions in his first season in Chicago, throwing a career-high 26 picks.
Eight years ago, trading for Cutler was a can’t-miss move. They were trying to make chicken salad. In total, Cutler ends his Bears career with 14 franchise records.
