Bears release quarterback Jay Cutler after eight seasons
The Chicago Bears have released quarterback Jay Cutler and the New York Jets are a team of interest.
On Friday, they were all just new employees, convinced they each had something valuable to offer a team with major needs. I’m just excited that it all worked out the way that I hoped and envisioned.
The other issue is this: Cutler might rather retire than come play for rebuilding team that probably isn’t going to win a lot of games next season. Seattle knows that all too well after Matt Flynn didn’t transform into another Matt Hasselbeck after arriving in 2012 from Green Bay.
The Bears front-loaded Glennon’s contract to limit long-term risk, and could still draft a quarterback.
Given the investment in Glennon, it would seem hard for the Bears to get any better at quarterback, but there’s one more option on the horizon.
WR Pierre Garcon (Washington) to San Francisco.
Wheaton is a former third round pick who was placed on injured reserve last November after suffering a torn labrum. He completed 59% of his throws for 19 touchdowns against nine interceptions. The Bucs tried to trade Glennon several times, but there were no takers.
While fans might be cautious at Glennon’s signing, most are likely estatic to see Chicago part ways with Cutler, a quarterback Bears-backers have loved to hate.
“I’ve been in three systems in four years, and there [are] pieces from all of them”, Glennon said.
Bears General Manager Ryan Pace said today at Glennon’s introductory press conference that the three-year, million contract the Bears gave Glennon is the contract of a starter, not a placeholder for some rookie who might arrive down the road. That not-so-dynamic duo has bungled the quarterback position from the start. But the 6-foot-6 quarterback feels strongly about offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains’ multi-faceted system – a scheme Glennon thinks plays to this strengths. On the bright side, if he plays badly and the Bears are bad again, there is the chance that they can get one of the top picks in next year’s draft. Second, Cutler has a higher completion percentage, yards per attempt, and quarterback rating. Jay Cutler does not always have the greatest reputation for dealing with teammates. They cut him shortly after the new league year began. The aftermath of the game may have been more memorable; that’s when Bears fans started lighting their Cutler jerseys on fire and posted images and videos of the tattered clothes on social media.
The former Pro-Bowler struggled last season, though.
But even if the Jets do land Cutler, he’ll be only a consolation prize.
Wouldn’t a move such as this make the MetLife boobirds, should they decide to show up in November and December, euphoric Woody Johnson didn’t raise ticket prices?
The Bears only made the playoffs once with him under center, in the 2010 season.
“He’s got all the traits that you want in a quarterback – I mean, height, arm strength, accuracy, the ability to quickly process”, Pace said. None was selected in Chicago’s previous two drafts.
