Beau Biden adviser to join Draft Biden group
Two months after his oldest son, Beau, died of brain cancer, the vice president has slowly returned to his duties at the White House and his residence at the Naval Observatory, where he invited lawmakers over Thursday to discuss the Iran nuclear deal. Vice-President Joe Biden organized meetings at his Washington home to decide on running for the US presidency, as that is what his late son encouraged him to do before dying in May, APA reports quoting Sputnik News.
Sources close to the vice president or his aides have reportedly said talk of a 2016 run is intensifying in the Biden camp. In addition to serving as Beau Biden’s chief adviser on political and fundraising issues, Alcorn had helped raise money for Biden’s 2008 presidential bid.
Josh Earnest, White House spokesman, weighed in Monday, too, on a possible Biden run, saying he’s been “an excellent vice president” and brings many honed diplomatic and political skills to the table.
“Ultimately, he’ll have to make up his own mind”, he added. Biden has been dispatched many times when some of the President Obama’s policy priorities have been stalled on Capitol Hill.
She said she anticipated the recent round of news coverage about whether he will enter the Democratic race later this summer or early in the fall.
Mr. Bidens advisers have started to reach out to Democratic leaders and donors who have not yet committed to Mrs. Clinton or who have grown concerned about what they see as her increasingly visible vulnerabilities as a candidate.
When Hillary Clinton announced her presidential campaign earlier this year, political insiders assumed the race was hers to lose. However, Clinton’s favorability ratings have been sliding in recent weeks. At this point, his best shot at being president might be to decline to run, and leave open the possibility that a Clinton collapse could result in a draft-Biden surge.
According to a Biden adviser cited by the Times’ Amy Chozick, the vice president had become “deeply moved” by Beau’s desire for him to run.
All of these personal elements make Biden a contender in the Democratic primary and that is reflected in the polling. With Bernie sanders already giving Hillary Clinton a stronger than expected challenge there are indications that Joe Biden might get into the race, as well. President Obama has been walking and talking on a fine line respecting Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, particularly since revelations she broke the president’s directives on keeping government records and communications.
“As the Biden family continues to go through this hard time, the Vice President is focused on his family and immersed in his work”, spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said in an e-mailed statement Saturday.
Biden has yet to say whether or not he will seek the nomination – but neither has he ruled it out.
