Beavers’ streak at 23; Harrison slam fuels 13-1 win over LSU
Newman’s first four pitches were balls, sending Trevor Larnach to first base to load the bases.
Though there were plenty of fireworks to follow, the single run might’ve been plenty for Fehmel on a night when pitching for both teams played a major role. Grenier and Madrigal scored on a single by Larnach.
On Saturday in Omaha, Oregon State used Rasmussen and bullpen ace Jake Mulholland after Thompson struggled. Rutschman scored on a ground out to the pitcher by Madrigal. KJ Harrison hit a grand slam homer over the leftfield fence.
The top of the seventh inning began with a walk and stolen base to put Tyler Malone on second with one out. Gretler was hit by a pitch. Kwan drew a walk, then Madrigal bounced to pitcher Peterson.
Monday he did exactly what Oregon State needed him to do.
Grenier reached base with one out on an error by shortstop Kramer Robertson. Three times he called for a hit-and-run, and three times the Beavers executed it successfully.
Oregon State faced questions on the mound, too.
Fehmel’s performance was slightly lost in the midst of the Beavers’ scoring output which is a shame because this kid is big time.
LSU is hitting.292 as a team this season with 63 homers and 74 steals in 101 attempts.
The 6th inning is where the Beavers took the reigns of this game and never looked back.
“I was just looking for a good pitch to hit”, Harrison said, “and put a good swing on it, keep it simple and stay relaxed, and I was able to do so”.
“Obviously, we had to take him (Walker) out”, Mainieri said.
Nick Coomes was in the lineup again at first base. Two of LSU’s four hits were pinch-hit singles in the ninth by Chris Reid and Jake Slaughter. LSU’s only run came on a home run by Zach Watson.
Execution all the way for top-ranked Oregon State off LSU’s Eric Walker in the top of the first.
The Tigers and Seminoles play a loser-out game on Wednesday. Mainieri replaced Walker with Caleb Gilbert, who performed admirably for 2.2 innings until OSU’s persistent hitters kicked down the door. Walker threw this past Saturday and had no discomfort.
“In his third warmup pitch before the third inning he just felt his forearm tighten up”, LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. Bush was lifted after walking the leadoff batter in the sixth. After Gilbert threw a wild pitch to the next batter, and was pulled for LSU reliever Nick Bush. The next batter, first baseman K.J. Harrison, was walked. The sophomore right-hander walked three and struck out three.
At the plate, LSU only had one hit through six innings.
To climb into the driver’s seat, Oregon State came out and played a nearly flawless game against a team that entered almost as hot as the Beavers with 17 wins in a row.
LSU, the 2017 SEC regular-season and tournament champion, saw its 17-game win streak end Monday night with a loss to Oregon State, but the Tigers’ national championship aspirations remain strong.
LSU pulled off a late 5-4 victory over the Seminoles, while Oregon State rallied from a big deficit to beat the Titans in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament.
Bryce Fehmel earned the win for the Beavers to improve to 6-2 on the year.
“It was fantastic. I’m very thankful and blessed to be able to do something like that”, Harrison said.
The loss of Walker affects not only the game against Florida State, but also possible future matchups against Oregon State. We can bounce back.
Primarily recruited as an infielder, Fehmel broke through as a pitcher a year ago and went 10-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 26 appearances (six starts).
