Beckham returning to field for UNICEF
Former England captain Beckham played for Manchester United for 11 years under the management of Ferguson.
David and Victoria Beckham are continuing to prove that their marriage is stronger than ever despite the various split rumours, with Posh taking to Instagram to show how proud she is of her husband, who’s returning to Old Trafford for a charity match.
Looking ahead to his latest activity with UNICEF, David commented “I want a world where children can grow up safe from violence, free from poverty and protected from preventable diseases”.
Alex Ferguson has criticised David Moyes for sacking Mike Phelan when he took over at Manchester United in 2013, accusing his successor of needing to prove his “manhood” by making “counter-productive” changes.
“First of all, he’s like a father figure to me – and he has been for so many years”.
In a post on Friday, UNICEF announced that Beckham will be joined by retired French footballer Zinedine Zidane who will captain the opposing team. Alex Ferguson was his manager there and he agreed to be involved in the upcoming game after David personally invited him.
Former Italian referee Pierluigi Collina will officiate the game, which is being called The Match for Children.
The former boss named Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Eric Cantona as the four world-class players he managed at United, but his words were quickly used against him.
However, the pair are on good terms now, and after Beckham put out feelers to make the UNICEF charity match happen, Ferguson accepted the offer.
Tickets are now available on the Manchester United website.
“It’s the weekend between global games so I can’t have worldwide players there unfortunately – but there will be a lot of top players there”.
“If you look at the time I was at for United for 27 years, I had a few fantastic players, a few great players. I never said those players were not great, they were fantastic”, he told SiriusXM FC. “Carlo Ancelotti is the (manager) of that team as well and I can’t believe it, but Sir Alex Ferguson is the (manager) of my team”.
