Belgian Police Surround ‘Bomb Suspect’ In Brussels
Police backed by bomb disposal teams cordon off part of central Brussels on Wednesday where they surrounded a “suspect” individual wearing a long coat with wires showing, the police and media say.
The man was behaving suspiciously and had worn a heavy winter coat in such warm temperatures, 30 degree Celsius.
Roads around the Place de la Monnaie in Brussels were blocked, and businesses were evacuated.
Police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere said no explosives were found and the man has been detained for questioning. Bomb squad has reached and photos from social media shows police are pointing guns at a man kneeling with hands up.
“We chose to take no risks”, a police spokesman said.
The operation has ended and the man was apparently a student of nuclear radiation at university in Brussels.
He is now being spoken to by police.
The Belgian capital has been on high alert after terror attacks killed 31 people in March.
Just last month a similar bomb scare occurred when a man in Brussels called authorities alleging he had been abducted and forced to wear a suicide belt that could be detonated remotely.
On April, coordinated suicide bombings at the Brussels’ airport and metro station left thirty-two deaths and more than three hundred wounded and have been the deadliest act of terrorism in the country’s history. An extremist cell linked to those attacks was based in Belgium.
