Belgium name Roberto Martinez as their new manager
Having started out at Swansea City, where he won the third-tier title, he went on to enjoy a spell at Wigan Athletic that included an against-the-odds FA Cup triumph in 2012-13.
The Spaniard was dismissed by Everton in May just before the end of a disappointing Premier League campaign, bringing to an end his three-year spell at Goodison Park.
He replaces Marc Wilmots, who was relieved of his duties as Red Devils manager following Belgium’s exit at the quarter-final stage of Euro 2016.
Martinez has come in for sustained criticism for his seeming inability to create a solid defence.
He led the Swans to promotion to the Championship before joining the Latics where he had spent six years as a player.
Martinez had a successful first season on Merseyside with the team’s attractive style of play earning them a fifth-placed finish.
Meanwhile, Martinez sold Marouane Fellaini immediately after arriving at Everton, but did sign and give Romelu Lukaku a prominent place in his side.
For clarification, this is the same Roberto Martinez who failed completely at Everton over the last two years.
Martinez had been linked with the Hull managerial vacancy before his shock Belgium appointment.
Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez has been appointed as Belgium’s new manager.
“Belgium made the announcement via its Twitter feed, saying “(hashtag) welcomeRoberto”.
