Belgium-Spain match postponed amid safety fears
The friendly match between Belgium and Spain is cancelled due to fears regarding security fears at the King Baudouin Stadion in the aftermath of the terror attacks on Paris.
A 27-year-old Belgian man has been identified by France as the mastermind behind the attacks, in which 129 people were killed and more than 350 injured.
They will also be deployed in and outside the stadium for the match tomorrow.
“After consulting with the relevant bodies and the Spanish national team, the (Belgian FA) chose to cancel the match”, the federation said in a statement. His whereabouts are now unknown. Originally set to take place in Brussels at 2:45 pm ET, the match postponement comes in the aftermath of Friday’s terrorist attacks across Paris.
“We deeply regret that such a friendly match between two motivated teams has been cancelled so late and we understand the disappointment of many supporters. Taking into account the exceptional circumstances, we cannot however take any security risk for our players and fans”.
The Stade de France was targeted as part of Friday’s attacks in Paris, as the home side played an worldwide against Germany.
Spain striker Alvaro Morata has tipped Belgium to challenge for next year’s European Championship in France.
Before the cancellation, the Spain players had said they weren’t anxious about the security situation.
La Roja were due to play the Red Devils in Brussels but it was confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday morning that the game would not go ahead.
