Ben Carson campaign says he never had formal offer from West Point
In addition, West Point reports they have no record of Carson applying or being admitted to the academy.
According to his account in “Gifted Hands”, he was offered a “full scholarship to West Point” after meeting with Gen. William Westmoreland, the Army chief of staff, because of his accomplishments in ROTC in Detroit.
“Afterward”, Carson writes, his high school ROTC director “introduced me to General Westmoreland, and I had dinner with him and the Congressional Medal winners”.
This version of the story is similar to a Facebook post from the former-neurosurgeon-turned-presidential-candidate in August, in which he wrote, “I knew medicine is what I wanted to do”.
After this event, some media questioned him about some other stories of his career, to the point that even Carson admitted that he made up the names of some childhood acquaintances in discussing his violent youth. (It was all the money I had.) I applied to Yale and thank God they accepted me. Because I had done so extraordinarily well, you know, I was told that someone like me – they could get a scholarship to West Point.
Unfortunately for Carson, the story reveals that he not only never applied for West Point, but he was definitely never invited to join the school with financial help, reports Politico.
The Human Rights Campaign quickly condemned Carson for his comments in regards to the LGBT movement.
“This is a bunch of lies, that is what it is”, Carson said on CNN’s New Day with Alisyn Camerota.
In his autobiography, the renowned brain surgeon wrote that as a teen, he tried to stab a friend named Bob in the stomach with a knife, but the boy’s belt buckle blocked the knife.
Pressed further by reporters during the news conference, Carson replied: “What about the West Point thing is false?” “I never said – wait a minute, don’t lie!”
Rubio had the card from 2005 to 2008 and has admitted buying groceries and airline tickets with it. He called the accusations “not a big deal” and said that he paid back all the personal expenditures. I often wonder what might have happened had they said no.
“If everybody here will sign an affidavit, saying that if I reveal the name of the person involved in this stabbing incident, that you will be singing my praises, and none of this stuff will ever go on again, I’ll think about it. Will you do that?” he said.
Carson acknowledged Friday that he was never offered a full scholarship to West Point, and sought to clarify that he had instead been given an informal offer or “nomination” to attend West Point. “This is a bunch of lies attempting to say I’m lying about my history. Nowhere did I say that”, the leading Republican presidential candidate challenged one reporter who suggested otherwise.
