Ben Carson compares abortion to slavery
While the Republican candidate said he opposes abortions for unwanted pregnancies and in cases of rape and incest, the retired neurosurgeon told moderator Chuck Todd he might be open to allowing abortions to preserve the life and health of the mother.
Asked about abortion, another siren call to voters who dominate the Republican primary, Carson said he would appoint supreme court judges to overturn Roe v Wade , the 1973 decision that enshrines the right. Carson explained his views with a slavery analogy, specifically pointing out that slave owners thought they had the right to do whatever they wanted to a slave.
Regarding repealing Roe v. Wade, Carson said, “I would like to see it done in the right way”. When Meet the Press host Chuck Todd asked whose rights are more important, the mother’s or the unborn child’s, Carson said the problem is that “the mother should not believe that the baby is her enemy and should not be looking to terminate her baby”.
It’s not actually surprising to me that Dr. Ben Carson does not have a boatload of empathy for rape and incest victims.
Ben Carson greets supporters after a speech at the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday.
He characterized instances in which pregnancy jeopardized the life and health of a woman as “an extraordinarily rare situation”. “I’m the only one to separate Siamese twins… the only one to take out half of a brain, though you would think that if you go to Washington that someone had beat me to it”. Carson stated previously that he supported a bill that would ban abortions at 20 weeks.
“To hear him say he wouldn’t help an incest survivor or a rape survivor do what they want to do with their own future…the guy is just completely off.”
I don’t think he has a boatload of empathy for anyone.
And you can’t say he’s new to this type of thing. Anything they chose to do. If a pregnancy puts your life at risk, Ben Carson is willing to “listen” as you beg for your life.
A series of surveys have shown that a clear majority of Americans believe there should be access to safe legal abortions, in most of all cases, even if they may not opt for such a procedure themselves. He told a CNN interviewer that Mr Carson wouldn’t be able to make deals with nations like Japan and China. The same day, several headlines burst forth about Carson comparing slavery and abortion.
Think Progress: “Carson: Women Who Have Abortions Are Like Slaveowners”. What Carson is doing, basically, is listing things he knows are “bad” and trying to figure out a way that they are related.
