Ben Carson Refers To Slaves As ‘Immigrants’
Newly appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson offered few policy specifics during his first address to employees on Monday, a meandering speech marked by a startling comparison between slaves brought to the USA and immigrants.
Donald Trump’s sleepy puppet went on to say that the slaves had dreams that their children and grandchildren could have the opportunity to “pursue prosperity”. Look at the determination in their eyes.
For obvious reasons, likening African people who were forcibly removed from their homeland and sold into bondage to hopeful immigrants drew immediate censure (and jokes).
‘A land of dreams and opportunity.
“No, Secretary Carson. Slaves didn’t immigrate to America”.
This isn’t the first time Carson has made spurious or inflammatory remarks about slavery.
HUD spokesman Brian Sullivan attempted to clarify Carson’s statement, saying, “Nobody here believes he was equating voluntary immigration with involuntary servitude”.
Carson was addressing the subject of attaining societal progress through hard work and resilience, a theme common in many of his speeches, when he skirted into the issue of slavery.
As a quick reminder, the retired neurosurgeon has a history of controversial comments.
I’m proud of the courage and perseverance of Black Americans and their incomprehensible struggle from slavery to freedom.
Critics note that Carson is a unsafe religious extremist, and worry that his extremism will likely impede his ability to serve Americans that do not share his Christian faith.
In other words, Ben Carson needs to take a seat.
A senior HUD official told the Washington Post that agency employees interpreted Carson’s comments as nothing other than a “heartfelt introduction to the HUD family”. “It was about control”.
One woman who called into the show said she disagreed with Carson, arguing, “you can’t be an immigrant if you’re brought over here in chains”, the magazine said.
