Ben Carson’s campaign responds to outrage over comments on Islam
When asked if he was comfortable with a Muslim being president, Trump, who has challenged Obama on his birthplace and citizenship multiple times in the past, told “Meet the Press“, “It’s something that at some point could happen”.
“I guess it depends on what that faith is”.
In response to Ben Carson‘s controversial objections to a hypothetical Muslim president over the weekend, one of the most prominent Muslim rights groups in America now says he should call it quits for his presidential run.
Dr. Ben Carson, who is running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, said in an interview Sunday morning that he would not vote for a Muslim to be president. To get reaction from a Congressman who is a Muslim, we have Andre Carson on the phone – no relation to Ben Carson.
The Anti-Defamation League expressed dismay Monday at recent statements made by Republican presidential candidates disparaging Muslims and saying they should not hold public office in the US.
Carson said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he would advocate that voters not put a Muslim in charge of the United States. “I absolutely would not agree with that”, Carson said on the Sunday program.
Hamilton County GOP Chairman Alex Triantafilou said Carson’s comments hurt the Republican Party’s efforts to increase its membership.
“Mr. Carson clearly does not understand or care about the Constitution, which states that ‘no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office. In his heart of hearts he could never advocate for a Muslim to become President of the United States“, Williams said.
Sanders released a statement on Twitter criticizing Carson’s statements and likening them to people who didn’t believe John F. Kennedy was fit to be president over 50 years ago because he was Catholic.
Do you think a candidate’s faith is relevant?
The first amendment reads: ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof’.
When moderator Chuck Todd pressed him further, asking, “Do you believe that Islam is consistent with the Constitution?”
“He has to come to the conclusion for what is best for America”.
