Ben Carson says ‘other immigrants’ arrived on slave ships
“That’s what America is about”, Carson said”, referring to the “can-do” attitude.
Ben Carson has a history of comparing things to slavery, Democratic consultant Angela Rye recalled on CNN’s “AC360”.
Carson has no experience working with housing or urban development, and has never held political office of any kind.
Carson shared his philosophy on success – an acronym that includes talent, honesty and God, among other things – and said that all people, no matter their ethnicity or background, shared a singular and awesome attribute: the human brain.
During a speech to the Values Voter Summit in 2013, Carson proclaimed the Affordable Care Act “the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery”.
Twitter was quick to slam the newly appointed politician.
Carson, who was confirmed to lead the department earlier this month, heralded the work ethic of immigrants before implying slaves who came to the United States worked harder than others. A HUD employee later told NCRM that Carson’s approach and attitude may have created uncertainties about how public assistance programs will be managed under him. Immigrants come to other lands voluntarily.
But he later sort to clarify his remarks on Facebook writing: ‘The slave narrative and immigrant narrative are two entirely different experiences’.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News’ request for comment Monday.
The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, a civil and human rights organization, issued a more searing statement that called Carson’s remarks as “offensive”. Ben Carson…. I can’t! The lady who stood up and said some of us were concerned but we’re not concerned about you anymore – no, they don’t cover that.
“I think at some point we all have to be accountable for the extemporaneous words we use as well”, Rye said of Carson speaking off the cuff at the speech.
“Carson: “Slaves were hopeful immigrants!”.
One reason they didn’t, he said, is “because they used the brain God gave them and they figured a time would come when there would be freedom, a time would come when their children could achieve”.
