Ben Carson Wants The Media To Stop Fact-Checking His Life Story
Carson’s strategy in handling tough criticism has been to disavow the mainstream media and claim bias, and that likely resonates with his supporters.
With the heat on, another damaging story emerged, contending that despite Carson having written that he was offered a “full scholarship” to West Point military academy, he never applied.
“The original story and headline said that Carson’s campaign had admitted he “fabricated” a “full scholarship” from West Point, but now Carson denies that his campaign ” s statement constituted such an admission, and the story and headline were changed to reflect that.
Lest you think the Mailbag was all politics, it was not: Dave Clements called to leave a message about our Friday Playlist (things that fly and/or the people who fly them): “You missed one. He’s claimed he was offered a scholarship”.
About 55 percent of Defense Department employees viewed Carson favorably, according to a recent poll conducted by Government Executive’s research arm, Government Business Council, a full 10 points higher than the next closest candidate. “He considered it but in the end did not seek admission”, Watts said. But if we don’t accept his version of his journey unconditionally, don’t trust him on West Point or going at people with hammers and knives, somehow that’s supposed to be our fault. The academy does not offer scholarships, instead extending all expenses paid to students it admits.
“I have always said that I expect to be vetted, but being vetted and what is going on with me – “You said this 30 years ago, you said this 20 years ago, this didn’t exist”…”
Carson also appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, CBS’ “Face the Nation” and ABC’s “This Week” to rebut the reports. “It was specifically made”. They get details wrong (freshman year, junior year) and impose larger themes onto disparate groups of events the way that we’re all liable to.
“I don’t remember the names of the people”, Carson said. “It’s nearly 50 years ago”. But Carson’s strained accuracy is better than an exaggeration. “What is false about it?” More stories of Carson’s exaggerations will trickle out and his fans, aided by the conservative media telling them that this is all the left’s attempt to destroy a risky conservative black man, will ignore reality until there is no other choice. I think they’re starting to find out that I’m not soft. “And a number of other people aren’t, either, that I’ve talked to”. I’m surprised he did not anticipate it. But in reality Westmoreland didn’t visit Detroit that weekend and Carson never actually went through the West Point application process; he never actually had a real offer of anything.
Ben Carson really does act indignant that the media refuses to believe that he didn’t try to stab somebody once.
Media scrutiny began in late summer after Carson said that he was robbed at gunpoint in a Popeye’s restaurant. He said the media perceive him to be a threat that must be neutralized: I’m a threat to the progressives [and] the secular progress movement in this country. Up to now, Carson has avoided media scrutiny since Trump had been at the top of the polls for over 110 days, and there were 17 Republican candidates for much of the summer and fall.
On MSNBC, Paul said Carson “is a Johns Hopkins surgeon”.
To date, Carson’s rhetoric and penchant for using extreme examples to prove his points, such as equating abortion with slavery, have not curbed his rise in preference polls and among small-dollar Republican donors.
