Ben McAdoo succeeds Tom Coughlin as New York Giants head coach
Giants co-owner John Mara said he’s eager to get back to winning because “the last Super Bowl is a distant memory”.
“I think ownership made the right decision for what’s best for the team”, Eli said. When we first interviewed Ben, we felt very, very positive. As co-owner Steve Tisch explained, the familiarity was key.
“Ben is an outstanding young coach who has great experience and has done a good job as our offensive coordinator”, Mara lauded.
“We’re not looking to rebuild”.
He commanded the room, clearly comfortable in his own skin, acting and sounding as if he had been there before, fearless and undaunted by the giant task of stepping out of the Tom Coughlin shadow. Mara did talk to Manning, who endorsed McAdoo.
The unknown for Mara and the Giants is that McAdoo has never been a head coach.
Under his leadership, Eli Manning threw 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions the past two seasons. They set franchise records for pass attempts (623), completions (392), and their 36 touchdown passes were the second-highest total in Giants’ history. Although he put up strong numbers in 2014, Manning needed almost the entire season to master McAdoo’s system. I think Coach McAdoo is a great coach, a great teacher, and will be a great leader of this team.
His job now is to get the franchise back on track.
I am not only pleased with McAdoo’s hiring, if the staff that is being rumored ends up being the actual coaching staff, I think McAdoo will have the people around him to make him a success right away. “Jerry and I interviewed six impressive candidates, and when we were through with that process, we had another conversation with Ben, as did Steve and Jon Tisch”. – Bill Pennington, New York Times The first man to arrive at work on Thursday morning was the one who had just been handed the biggest job in the organization. He didn’t have the talent to work with.
Former New York Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo holds a team helmet during a news conference announcing him as the new head coach of the NFL football team, Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, in East Rutherford, N.J. When the Giants sign a coach, they hope he’ll be around for the long haul. He was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012-2013.
“McAdoo wasn”t the only Giants coach being wooed by the Eagles.
“Believe me, I thought about the Mike Tomlin scenario quite a bit”, Mara said. To honor his mentor, McAdoo won’t. So it’s possible Coughlin saw similar issues he dealt with while coaching the Giants, both in terms of controlling who he could hire as his assistants and in being able to cook with his perferred groceries.
He answered questions with a savvy beyond his years, giving you the impression NY will not scare him in the least, will not rattle him the way it did Ray Handley. “But I feel good about him”. Reese, the Giants’ GM since 2007, had alternately said last week that he assumed “full responsibility” for the Giants’ failures over the last four seasons, then pointed out that he’d worked with Coughlin on personnel decisions and even cited Coughlin’s in-game decision-making as reasons for a second straight 6-10 campaign.
Team president John Mara has heard the anecdote, and he’s all for keeping the Giants on Coughlin time. The Giants have reportedly offered Coughlin a job in the front office, and with McAdoo at the helm on the sidelines, it seems much more likely that Coughlin would accept a non-coaching role than if someone external was hired as head coach.
