Bencic beats Serena, wins Canadian Open
She came onto Centre Court at Aviva Centre in red and white to cheers from a bunch in the all-familiar Genie’s Army, decked in white t-shirts spelling out G-E-N-I-E.
The 21-year-old from Westmount, Que., fell to Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic on Tuesday night and has now lost her opening match at six of her last eight tournaments.
And just like the original, she seems destined to be a big hit.
Bencic had the edge nearing the end of the match however beside the numbers, Bouchard’s unending losing streak was the central point of her headway into the second round.
“The reality is Williams’ upcoming mission is a distraction that weighs heavily on her. She has vowed to not talk about this quest for the gold-standard Grand Slam, but she has talked about it in code ever since she won Wimbledon“, ESPN reported. She is coming off a loss to Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic in the semifinals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. “I played like an amateur to be honest”.
The other Women’s Semi-Final features Sara Errani in the white top serving to number two seed Simona Halep in the far court, with the Italian looking to pull off her own upset, but she’s also working to keep the Romanian from breaking her serve in the fifth game of the match, when Halep’s forehand down the line puts her up 3-2, en route to taking the set 6-4. “It’s very stressful to win a tournament, but I think it’s a good experience”.
Bencic still looked in complete control having her talents scrape away at Kerber who pleaded for her coach’s counsel during the break. Bencic knows how to win.
As the same time, she realizes time is running out on her career though her results suggest otherwise – she is 47-2 this year and has won four championships.
“I think that’s a good analogy”, she said. The way she reads the game, anticipates shots and comes up with crafty responses is not something you often get from the up-and-comers on Tour, many of whom are ball-bashers or are yet to mature enough to play that way.
It will be interesting to see how the 18-year-old Bencic can mentally handle the emotions from her big win and start again from scratch this week in Cincinnati. I tried to not focus much on this, but of course, it is dangerous in those situations. Up a set and 4-3 now, Bencic had to save two break points with some very precise ground strokes.
