Bendable Smartphone Displays in the Works at Samsung
They won’t fall under Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship line, but will instead be sold under a entirely new product name, claims the report.
Do you think we’ll actually see a flexible Samsung smartphone in 2017 or are we still several years away from a consumer product? The second one will be a phone that folds in half, similar to a flip phone with a screen on both sides.
Rumors regarding Samsung’s newest flagship for its Galaxy Note line the Galaxy Note 6 is spreading online, revealing that it will have an earlier that expected release date in August 3 2016.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a foldable smartphone launch from Samsung in 2017 either.
Bloomberg points out that the timing of the release is probably meant to give Samsung a head start over Apple, which is also expected to announce its own OLED-based phones in the same year. “Their biggest obstacle was related to making transparent plastics and making them durable, which seems resolved by now”, IBK Securities Co. analyst Lee Seung-Woo told Bloomberg.
Samsung is said to be working on bendable phones, with form factors now not available on the market. Samsung is hoping flexible phone screens will change things in 2017.
Sources corroborated to Bloomberg that the two bendable smartphone models will use organic light-emitting diodes for better screen technology. It has pioneered the development of new screen formats with its multi-sided Edge smartphones.
Since Samsung has refused to comment on this leak when contacted by the media, the information should be taken with a grain of salt.
The smartphones, codenamed “Project Valley”, apparently won’t launch under Samsung’s usual “Galaxy S” brand, so don’t expect to be able to fold up the Galaxy S8 and shove it in your pocket. The other is a 5-inch phone that you can expand out into an 8-inch device.
