Bengals almost beat the Steelers, then remember they’re the Bengals
The Bengals cornerback, whose penalty at the end of the game led to the Steelers’ game-winning field goal, ripped the officials and Steelers linebackers coach Joey Porter in a profanity-laced rant on Instagram following the game.
AJ McCarron will try to get the Bengals a win to end what is one of the longest stints in the National Football League without a postseason win for Cincinnati. It’ll be especially long for Jeremy Hill, Vontaze Burfict and Adam Jones.
– Ryan Shazier, Steelers, had 13 total tackles, including nine solo, and forced two fumbles in Pittsburgh’s 18-16 win at Cincinnati.
The hit gave the drive new life and put the Steelers within field goal range.
The first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty came from an unlikely source, Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak. Jones was livid after the game, sending a since-deleted tweet on how the refs should have punished Porter for mixing things up in the middle of the field. Despite this, the Bengals never looked threatened as they rolled to their second AFC North title in three years with a 12-4 record.
The 11-5 Steelers snuck into the playoffs in Week 17 thanks to a win and a New York Jets loss. Pittsburgh took over with 1:23 left, and all of a sudden it was a game again. As NFL.com noted, it was clear that Roethlisberger was far from 100 percent when he returned for the final drive, as he stuck mostly to short passes and seemed in pain, so his availability for next week’s game will be one of the biggest stories in the coming week.
After a Jeremy Hill fumble gave the ball back to the Steelers with an improbable fumble after stretching for extra yards, Roethlisberger re-entered the game, drove his Steelers downfield to get them in position.
The Steelers travel to Denver to face Peyton Manning’s Broncos next week. After watching the Kansas City Chiefs absolutely crush the Houston Texans, with Brian Hoyer putting on one of the worst quarterbacking displays ever seen, fans were treated to a rivalry game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals. In two plays, the Steelers were gifted 30 yards by Bengals players lacking the necessary discipline to grasp the enormity of the moment and keep their composure.
The Pittsburgh Steelers beat bitter rivals the Cincinnati Bengals in a bone-jarring, ill-tempered 18-16 last second victory in their AFC Wild Card playoff game on Saturday.
The Steelers got the ball on the Bernard fumble, but Roethlisberger was sacked by Burfict on third down and later carted to the locker room with a right shoulder injury. The score was 15-0 at that point. On fourth down just past midfield with a little under three minutes to go, the Bengals would convert and take the clock down to the two minute warning. He was booed as he left the field.
That marked four straight quarters the Bengals had been blanked in the postseason and they were heading into risky territory with backup quarterback AJ McCarron. On fourth-and-2 at the 37, McCarron passed to Marvin Jones for a 9-yard gain to set up Green’s go-ahead touchdown.
Ben Roethlisberger suffered the right shoulder injury in the closing seconds of the third quarter, when Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict sacked him, ESPN reported. The Steelers got the ball back with all of their timeouts remaining, but Burfict intercepted Landry Jones on the next play from scrimmage. Earlier in the day, the Chiefs ended their eight-game playoff losing streak dating back to January 1994.
