Benghazi 101: What You Need to Know Ahead of Clinton’s Testimony
To understand why, you need to know what happened on that day in 2012.
Benghazi was the rare city in Libya that provided hope for a progressive future for the country. Critics of the film say it simplifies the bombing of a US diplomatic compound in Libya down to a narrative about the singlehanded triumph of American heroes.
What we now know, from multiple congressional investigations, is this: The Benghazi compound was not heavily reinforced, and a group of attackers opened a gate, enabling dozens of armed men to enter.
About 20 minutes later, a security agent, along with Ambassador Chris Stevens and Foreign Service Officer Steven Smith, try to escape.
By 11:15 p.m., the security is bad enough that those who remain decide to evacuate to the nearby annex. Everyone is out by 11:30 p.m.
Shortly after they get to the annex, at around midnight, there’s another attack. (See: Pearl Harbor.) But his latest movie, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi – which doesn’t arrive in theaters until January 2016 – is already coming under fire.
The video initially singled out as being responsible for the attack was a sermon about the differences between Islam and Christianity by “Pastor Jon”, an Oregon preacher.
Fitton says other documents referring to “a previously Secret “Attack Timeline” show there was no discussion of any “spontaneous demonstration” or video being responsible for the attack.
That turned out to be inaccurate.
The House Select Committee, according to the Associated Press, has interviewed 54 witnesses, including seven eyewitnesses to the attack who hadn’t been interviewed in earlier investigations.
Ninereports from six different committees have attempted to explain what went wrong. Hillary Clinton has always been a main focus for lawmakers – mainly Republican lawmakers. Dems say the committee is purely political at this point. “These documents detail delays and lack of support that raise questions about whether American lives were needlessly lost and put at risk during the Benghazi attack”.
“Her numbers are dropping”, Rep. Kevin McCarthy said on the “Sean Hannity Show.”
