Bergeron scores twice and Bruins beat Jets 6-2
The win for the Bruins helped erase some of the sting of a 9-2 loss on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings.
Tuukka Rask made 34 saves for Boston.
This is Bergeron’s second-career fight in the regular season, and fourth in the National Hockey League. Aggressive work in the Winnipeg end from Bergeron and Connolly set up Marchand in front of the net.
Loui Eriksson and Brad Marchand each had a goal and an assist.
Less than a minute after the goal, Rinaldo and Chris Thorburn engaged in a fight, which was won by the Jets winger. Being down a goal, we can’t play like that if we want to come back.
In the second, Marchand and Bergeron flexed their muscles against old friend Blake Wheeler. He fanned on the attempt, but drew three Bruins, which left Bryan Little wide open streaking down the opposite side of the net.
Winnipeg responded with Little’s goal at 3:29.
Winnipeg’s first power play 56 seconds later erased Boston’s lead.
“It’s really nothing”, Myers said.
Maurice struggled to explain the Bruins’ second-half takeover. Wheeler had the puck deep in the Bruins zone, and again he drew all the attention of the B’s defense. He lifted the backhand past Hellebuyck for the Bruins go ahead goal. On a 2-on-1 Hutchinson made the first stop but Pastrnak swatted in his own rebound for his sixth goal of the season. At one point the Jets were only down a goal but had out shot the Bruins 30-11. Connor Hellebuyck started in goal for Winnipeg but was pulled after one period. “That’s what we wanted, but we know that there is a lot more to this road trip than just one game”.
Fight No. 4: Bergeron and Wheeler throw down You can see the fight from earlier above as Bergeron and Wheeler throw punches wildly before the Jets forward falls on top of the Canadian Olympian. Wheeler, who is the much bigger of the two, got the best of the Selke Trophy victor, who took a hard fall to the ice thanks to the Jet winger.
Boston led 3-2 at the first intermission, and then the teams were scoreless in the second.
Winnipeg heads out for a four-game road trip, starting Saturday in Edmonton. Pastrnak held the puck, delaying a shot to attempt to draw both the defense and the goalie’s attention to Beleskey. Hutchinson finished with 25 saves off 27 shots.
Bergeron put in a close rebound from Connolly at 7:42 of the final period for his second of the game.
Bergeron ended a five-game goal drought when he scored his 20th of the season at 1:38 of the first period after making slick moves around two Jets defenders in front of the net.
Thursday he provided a reminder that he is capable of points, as Connolly registered the first three-point game of his career. Ehlers scored his 13th goal this season on a shot from the bottom right circle.
The Bruins will get their chance to show just how worthy they are of investment over the next two weeks on the road, but don’t count on Sweeney getting any “crazy ideas” on sacrificing future assets for a team that’s clearly in transition this season.
