Bernie Sanders Explains Why Boehner’s Resignation is a Bad Thing
Ultimately Boehner recognized that, announcing his resignation Friday in an effort to head off “leadership turmoil” that would do “irreparable damage” to the GOP-led House of Representatives.
“I hope that we’ll look at winning the presidency in 2016 and realize… our actions in the House and the Senate, because we on both bodies could jeopardize that, or actually enhance the ability to win“, said Graham.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, who’s running for president, received boisterous applause and a standing ovation when he informed a crowd at the Values Voter Summit in Washington that Boehner will resign. Malcolm said the House has not yet scheduled a vote to select the next speaker, but that the vote is expected to be held before Boehner vacates the seat.
John embodies the American dream, the son of a bartender who grew up to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and I wish him and his family the very best as they move forward with this decision.
For one, the issues go deeper than Boehner: grassroots Republicans are battling the entire GOP establishment for the future of the party.
Congress could once again be scrambling to avert a looming government shutdown, the loss of federal funding for thousands of highway projects and an unprecedented government default.
While insisting the decision is up to fellow Republicans, Boehner declared that “Kevin McCarthy would make an excellent speaker”. “I’ve never known him to coast”.
Warren Wilson political science Professor Chris Kypriotis says Boehner’s resignation gives Meadows more notoriety. I think the guy’s exhausted, he just had a grandchild…
On July 28, Representative Mark Meadows proposed a motion to “vacate the chair”, which would have forced a vote on a new speaker.
“While I disagree with Speaker Boehner’s politics”, Rep. Norma Torres, D-Pomona wrote in a written statement Friday morning, “I appreciate his commitment and respect for this institution”. While having his invitation to the pope rewarded with an address to Congress was important, putting the nation on a solid fiscal path would be a terrific legacy. But it’s also been defined by his struggles with tea party conservatives who opposed his tendencies toward deal-making.
But Boehner faced conservative pressure to defund Planned Parenthood in a stopgap spending bill. It’s likely to pass with Democratic support, setting up another funding fight in just a few months. He is no conservative firebrand, and it is questionable how many points the Tea Party faction gained for themselves by forcing Boehner out.
The situation has come about even as Republican leaders and outside groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have worked diligently in recent cycles to elect mainstream candidates, not fringe tea partyers.
